Bottom LineSteganos Privacy Suite includes file encryption, password management, privacy protection, and more, but only the file encryption component is worth your while. If a massive data breach leads to your personal details showing up online along with thousands (or millions) of others, there's nothing you can really do except change your passwords and monitor your accounts. But that doesn't mean you should give up. There are lots of things you can do to proactively protect your own, among them encrypting your sensitive files and using strong, unique passwords for all your secure websites.
Steganos Privacy Suite includes tools to manage your passwords, to encrypt and hide your documents, and more. Version 19 offers a few enhancements, including two-factor authentication, but its password manager is weak, its encrypt-and-hide component can fail without notice, and its privacy settings did not work in testing. Only the file encryption component is worth your attention. These days you pay for most security products with a yearly subscription. That gets you all updates to the security software, and it also pays for the encrypted online storage of your passwords and other secrets. With Steganos, your $59.95 payment lets you install the product on up to five PCs and keep using it indefinitely.
You only pay again if you want to upgrade to a newer version. The suite includes fully functional instances of Steganos Safe, which costs $39.95 as a standalone, and Steganos Password Manager, which goes for $24.95. Buying the suite instead saves you about $10. It also gets you a few suite-specific privacy features. Early editions of this suite included. Given that the VPN costs $49.95 per year as a standalone, that seemed like quite a value proposition.
However, the per-year pricing didn't jibe with the one-time-fee for the rest of the suite, so Steganos dropped it. In any case, PCMag's VPN expert Max Eddy rated this product just two stars. Getting Started With SteganosAfter the quick, simple installation, Steganos displays its main window. At the left is a matrix of eight icons representing the suite's features: Safe, Password Manager, Shredder, Trace Destructor, Crypt & Hide, Private Favorites, Portable Safe, and Privacy. The suite is effectively a launch pad for these utilities. The right-hand portion of the main window is a kind of security progress report.
Just by installing the suite, you start with a 20 percent security level. Creating an encrypted safe for storing sensitive files gets you another 20 percent, and setting up the password manager raises it by another 20.
Using the password manager's bonus ability to store private favorites adds 20 percent more. Configuring the Privacy components takes you to 100 percent. I like the way this simple report encourages consumers to explore and fully utilize the product's features. The previous edition included a ninth item, E-mail Encryption, but it wasn't a good fit, and is now gone. This component came from a third party, MyNigma.
It worked only with Outlook, and only supported secure email with other users of the MyNigma product. I don't miss it. Steganos SafeAs noted, you get the full utility as part of your privacy suite. Do please read my review of Steganos Safe for all the juicy details. I'll summarize here.Looking at the suite's main window, the icons for Safe, Shredder, Trace Destructor, and Portable Safe all refer to components of Steganos Safe.
Alien colonial marines steam. It would stop the silent failure problem, force your developers to check their shit, and you could even integrate it into your build/deploy process for values that are written then with a quick check of 'can I gracefully start and stop the app?'
This utility lets you create encrypted containers, called safes, for your important files. You can store safes on a local drive, on a removable drive, or in your cloud storage account (Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive). New in version 19, you can convert an entire disk partition into a safe; note that doing so wipes out all existing data, just as if you formatted the drive.Putting files into an encrypted safe is just half the process.
The other half is deleting the unsecured originals, and just sending them to the Recycle Bin is insufficient. To ensure that those files are gone for good, foiling forensic recovery software, use the file shredder component, which overwrites file data before deletion.
It can also shred all free space on the drive, effectively shredding previously deleted files. And you can use it to wipe every trace of data from any drive except the drive holding the operating system. Your browsers keep track of your browsing history, allow websites to save cookies on your local device, and cache pages for quick redisplay. All this saved data could reveal your browsing history to a snoop who got access to your computer. Windows, too, maintains many lists of recent activities.
The TraceDestructor component wipes out any or all of these traces. Once you've checked off the ones you want to eliminate, you can repeat the process with a single click. You can exempt specific sites to retain their cookies, and you can set it to clear browser traces whenever the browser shuts down.Steganos Safe is a good. It doesn't offer all features found in some competing products, but if your focus is on creating encrypted storage for your important files, it totally does the job. Steganos Password ManagerIf all your passwords are 'Rover' or '123456,' you're in a precarious position.
A breach that exposes one of your accounts effectively exposes them all. You really should use a different password for every site, and one that's complex enough that nobody could guess it. And the only practical way to do that is with a.I put to the test and found it lacking in several areas. Please read my full review for information beyond the summary that follows. As with most competing products, you start your Steganos experience by creating a. But unlike most competing products, Steganos doesn't automatically sync between devices. If you want syncing, you must configure it to use your own cloud storage service (Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive). Once you've done that, you can set up read-only password access for any number of Android or iOS devices; these don't count against your five licenses.
New in this edition, Steganos supports two-factor authentication using Google Authenticator or a compatible utility. You can also apply two-factor authentication to your safes. When you log in to a secure site, Steganos now captures your credentials without waiting for confirmation. In testing, it had trouble with common sites, among them OpenTable and Amtrak.
When I tried its manual login capture feature, it captured some, but not all, of these. That's a weakness I haven't seen in other products, nor in the previous edition of this product, which handled credential capture a bit differently.Digging into the menu, you'll find the option to save a limited set of private data for use filling web forms. In testing, this feature worked in Chrome and Firefox, but not in Internet Explorer. It wasn't terribly accurate. On one page, it filled the First, Full, and Last name fields with the last name and skipped the street address.Private Favorites are simply bookmarks that sync along with your passwords, so you can use them on all your devices. Think of them as login entries minus the login credentials.
Steganos Password Manager does offer some interesting features. You can create a read-only portable edition to carry with you. A virtual keyboard prevents keyloggers, even hardware-based ones, from capturing your master password. To organize your password collection, you can create category folders and subfolders. And it includes the expected password generator. Overall, though, it's disappointing.
The best free password managers are more effective, and the best commercial ones leave Steganos in the dust. Encrypt and HideThe name Steganos comes from the term steganography, which is not the same as encryption. The aim of encryption is to ensure that others can't decipher your secrets. The aim of steganography is to conceal even the fact that you have secrets.
When you process a file through the suite's Crypt & Hide component and then shred the original, a hacker or snoop won't find any evidence that the sensitive data exists.I don't know precisely how this tool encrypts files—it's not in the company's interest to reveal such information. But here's a simple example of how steganography could work to hide a file inside an image. First, picture that the file contains a list of numbers representing the exact color of each pixel in the image. Now round all those numbers so they're even.
That tiny change to the least significant bit in the number doesn't make a visible difference in the image. Convert your secret file into a stream of bits, and step through the list of the image's pixels, leaving the color number unchanged for zero bits and making it odd for one bits. You've hidden the file in a way that's completely recoverable, but the image doesn't look appreciably different.Steganos can use BMP, WAV, or JPG files as carriers for encrypted data. The help system advises using a carrier file at least 20 times the size of the encrypted data. You can also use it to create encrypted archives without hiding them, much as you'd do with a ZIP archive utility. Note, though, that the archives created by Steganos use the proprietary EDF format, not the standard ZIP format.
To create a simple encrypted archive, you drag files and folders onto the Crypt & Hide dialog, or browse to locate the desired items. You can also enter a text description of the contents, encrypted along with the files. Clicking Save lets you define the name and location for the resulting EDF file. The password entry dialog is the same as that used by Steganos Safe and Steganos Password Manager, except that it doesn't offer two-factor authentication. It rates password strength as you type, with the option to use a virtual keyboard, or to define the password by clicking a sequence of pictures. To create an encrypted file and hide it, follow precisely the same procedure, but click the Hide button instead of the Save button, and choose a BMP, WAV, or JPG file as carrier. Your secret files reside within the chosen carrier.
Of course, you must use the shredder to destroy the unsecured originals. Don't believe it?
Launch Crypt & Hide again, choose Open, and select your carrier. Once you enter the password, your files magically reappear. In testing, I had trouble coming up with a carrier file large enough to satisfy prompts from Steganos. I created a simple text file, just 25 bytes. When I tried to hide it in a JPG file, I got a warning that the file might be too small, recommending a file at least 39.9MB. That's about 1.6 million times the size of the input file, a far cry from the recommended 20 times. I tried converging the JPG image to a BMP file.
BMP files don't use compression, so the resulting file was quite a bit bigger. Oddly, with the bitmap file Steganos recommended a minimum size of 9.98MB. That's still almost half a million times the size of the input.I ignored the warning and proceeded to hide my sample file successfully. The carrier looked no different. But when I chose to open it with the password, my top-secret text file magically appeared.I assumed that if the carrier were truly too small to hold the encrypted data, Steganos would warn me.
To check this theory, I tried storing a large JPG inside a smaller JPG, a clear impossibility. Steganos displayed no error messages, and the process seemed to work. However, when I tried to open the carrier file, I got the same error that occurs upon trying to open a file that isn't a carrier. Apparently, the Crypt & Hide process simply failed, with no notice.
Had I already shredded the original, I would be up a creek. Crypt & Hide is truly useful for deeply hiding sensitive documents, but you must use it carefully. Since it can fail without notice, you must always double-check the result. After hiding files, always open the carrier and make sure the operation succeeded before shredding the originals.
And, of course, don't forget where you hid your secrets, and what password you used. Privacy SettingsClicking the Privacy icon brings up a simple settings dialog with four on/off switches: Webcam protection, Block ads, Prevent tracking, and Anonymize browser type. They're all off by default. I couldn't test Webcam protection, because my virtual machine test systems don't have webcams. In addition, every time I opened Privacy Settings I got a notification from Windows that the webcam privacy component crashed. I reported this crash problem in my last review.
I assumed the developers would fix it for the next version, but by observation, they didn't.Webcam protection in Steganos does nothing but deactivate your webcam, so you must turn that protection off if you want to use the cam for videoconferencing. The webcam feature in ESET Internet Security lets you disable the webcam in general but enable specific programs. That would prevent webcam spying while still letting you Skype, for example.Kaspersky Internet Security and also offer webcam blocking for all but authorized programs. Kaspersky extends similar protection to the microphone, to head off the possibility of a snoop listening in on your activities. Internet advertisers work hard to profile your personal surfing habits, so they can target ads based on your interests. If you've ever bought (or looked at) a product on one site and then seen an ad for that product on a different site, you've seen this process in action. You can set your browser to send a Do Not Track header with each request, but nothing compels sites to obey this header.

The Prevent tracking option in Steganos filters out tracking activity before it reaches the browser. However, I couldn't find any way to see it work. All the other active Do Not Track features I've seen display a list of trackers on the current site and let you control whether to block them. Some trackers skip the usual techniques for tying together all data about your online activity, instead trying to create a fingerprint of your devices and activity, including precise data about the browsers you use. Biohazard 4 pc save file. Steganos lets you replace your actual browser details with a generic fake set, to anonymize your browser type. In the previous edition, this component visibly failed.
This time around, I expected success, and did seem to see a successful change to the User Agent String (which lets any site get details about your browser and operating system) one time. But when I tried to repeat the test to get screenshots, it failed, as before. I haven't been able to make it work again. The remaining privacy option involves blocking all advertisements. A simple test, logging in to the same ad-laden pages on the test system and on an adjacent system with no ad-blocking, revealed this feature's failure. All the same ads showed up, some of them clearly based on my own browsing behavior.During my previous review, I worked closely with Steganos tech support, supplying diagnostic files and reports.
The agents determined that the proxy service, which manages these features, wasn't running. Even when we got it running temporarily, the associated features just didn't work. It appears this hasn't changed. The worst thing about this component is that even when its proxy failed to load, it didn't display any kind of error message. Even when they work, the privacy features do their jobs silently.
They're no visible indication when they're not functioning, unless you notice the failure to block ads. Another Take on Privacy. Is another suite of tools aimed at protecting your privacy.
Its active Do Not Track component goes way beyond just sending the DNT header, which websites can ignore. Furthermore, unlike Steganos, it makes its DNT activity visible. It includes a simple password manager that goes beyond Steganos by offering a safety report that flags weak and duplicate passwords.Blur protects your privacy by masking email accounts, credit cards, and (on a smartphone) phone numbers.
Suppose you make a purchase from a merchant using a masked email account, and a masked credit card. Mail from the merchant reaches your regular email inbox, even though the merchant doesn't have that address. If the masked account starts getting spam, just delete it (and find a merchant with better practices). Likewise, a merchant who doesn't have your real credit card number can't sell the card data or overcharge you. Read my review for a full explanation.Blur doesn't block ads, and it doesn't include file encryption, but its components are all directly aimed at protecting your privacy. Even if you do install the Steganos suite, consider trying Blur's free edition for additional protection. Note that if you do opt for a $39-per-year premium subscription, you can use Blur on all your devices.
Do You Already Have Privacy Protection? You may also find that you've already got significant privacy protection courtesy of your security suite. For example, and AVG Internet Security include an active Do Not Track system, like what Blur offers, and Kaspersky can block banner ads. As noted, webcam protection in Bitdefender, Kaspersky and ESET goes farther than what you get with Steganos. As for encrypted storage, the core of Steganos Privacy Suite, you can find a similar feature in many security suites, among them Bitdefender, Kaspersky,.
Admittedly, none of the suites build out this feature into the comprehensive encryption system that is Steganos Safe.Password management is becoming a common bonus feature in larger suites. McAfee comes with all the multi-factor authentication glory of True Key., Trend Micro, ESET, Kaspersky, and Bitdefender are among the other suites with a password manager built right in.Before you purchase a set of privacy tools, check to see what you already have right in your existing security suite. Stick With Steganos SafeSteganos Safe is the best part of Steganos Privacy Suite. It offers multiple locations for encrypted file safes, including converting a whole partition to a safe. It can also conceal the very existence of a safe, and it now supports two-factor authentication. The other components all have their problems.Steganos Password Manager covers basic password tasks, but it had trouble capturing common websites that competing products handle with ease. The Privacy component simply did not work, and its webcam component crashed every time I opened the settings.
Crypt & Hide is a clever way to hide important data inside media files, but it offers absurdly large suggestions for the carrier file size, and silently fails if the carrier is too small. Stick with Steganos Safe; you don't need the rest of this suite, not in its current form.
